Australian Tech News Update
Have you heard the latest in Australian tech news? As of March this year, the Australian Domain Administration (auDA) introduced the option for Australian website users to use an .au domain namespace for their site. These shorter domain namespaces will make your website accessible and complimentary to your business name! Offering convenience for you and your customers, registering your website as an .au domain is something we highly recommend!
Having a strong IT and tech support system in place for your company is imperative to your success, have you heard of Support?
Before you go off and panic, let us take you through what this update means for you as a website owner! Whilst this new domain will not replace other namespaces like .com.au or .net.au, this new structure will allow you to solidify your brand as an Australian site and business. Earlier this year, auDA opened up registrations for existing sites to change to this new domain. If your current website ends with .com.au (or another iteration), you are able to upgrade to your new URL before the 20th of September, 2022.
After the 20th of September this year, all .au domains will be available to the public to purchase on a first come, first serve basis. To protect your domain and business, we recommend that you jump on registering your site for its new domain today!
What are namespaces?
Domain namespaces are the suffix at the end of your URL. A domain ending often can alert internet users to where the website, person or organisation is located. In Australia, there are several different iterations of the .au namespace that signify different sectors and businesses.
The .au direct domain name is shorter, snappier and more memorable! Most namespaces are open for registration to the general public in Australia. If you currently own a domain name in another Australian namespace created prior to 24 March 2022 you have priority to register your site with an .au namespace.
How do I know if I’m eligible for an .au namespace?
Simple! To register for your new direct namespace, you must be able to prove your Australian presence with your ABN, Trademark number and Australian ID. For more information on how to switch to your new domain, check out the Australian Domain Authority website.
So, whilst this change offers convenience and benefits to Australian website owners, it also presents an opportunity for malicious domains to be created and pose cybersecurity risks.
