In the 1800s, workers were often expected to work 10-12 hours a day, six days a week. These conditions caused a labour movement to begin in Australia, which focused on fighting for better working conditions, wages and workers’ rights. In 1856, after protests in Sydney and Melbourne, the 8-hour workday was brought to fruition.

Today, Labour Day is celebrated across the country and commemorates this historical achievement.
